Don’t Make Your Life Hard
It’s a simple statement, but it’s something I have shared with my children for as long as I can remember. Honestly, they will probably put it on my tombstone someday.
Benjamin Franklin famously said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail,” and I am a firm believer that intentional preparation is the absolute key to living an easy, peaceful life. Sometimes we meet people and it seems like everything they touch turns to gold. We think they’re just lucky. But I truly believe that the people who make life look effortless are actually spending purposeful time behind the scenes setting themselves up for success.
For me, creating a frictionless life comes down to two things: smart habits and the right tools. Whether I’m managing a household, navigating a complex project, or planning a getaway, I rely on a short list of “Don’t make your life hard-isms” to save my sanity:
1. The Daily Life Hacks (The “Just in Case” Habits)
Living easily means anticipating the bumps before you hit them. It’s why I tell my kids: “You go to school where it always rains—always carry an umbrella.” It’s why I get gas before the low-fuel light comes on, so I’m never stopping after dark in an unfamiliar area. And it’s why I think everyone needs to know how a household operates. For the love of all things, know where your water shut-off valve is before a toilet overflows!
2. The Night-Before Reset
If you have to get up earlier than usual, don’t wing it in the morning. Organize your bags the night before, set two alarms, plan a seamless breakfast, and lay out your clothes. If you’re going somewhere new, drop the address into Google Maps ahead of time so you visually know the layout of that major downtown area, hospital, or sprawling campus before you even put the car in drive.
3. The Digital Brain: Why You Should Use Microsoft OneNote
The motto “Don’t make your life hard” applies heavily to our professional and personal digital spaces, too. If you are still relying on a scattered mess of sticky notes, bookmarked emails, and random legal pads to keep your world running, you are working too hard.
My absolute holy grail for organization is Microsoft OneNote. It reminds me of my sixth grade science notebook with the brown tabs between subjects – but digital. By offloading everything from my brain into a structured, searchable tool, I don’t have to waste energy remembering the small stuff. It’s the ultimate life hack for organization and productivity.
4. Redefining Vacation: Started Cruising and Not Looking Back!
One might ask, why do I spend so much time optimizing my daily routine and organizing my world? So, I can completely leave the logistics behind when it’s time to unwind.
A few years ago, as a new empty-nester, I took a cruise with friends and something just clicked. Fast forward to today: eight cruises later (with six more booked!), I am completely hooked. While I still love a great land adventure, hiking, or a quick day trip, nothing beats the effortless nature of a cruise. You just show up, the destinations come to you, and the logistics are entirely handled. It is the ultimate manifestation of “don’t make your life hard.”
